Creating a call sign stand or other item is basically done in three stages.

Design your item

The item has to be designed using a CAD (Computer Aided Design) program, this will ultimately be 3d printed.

This is actually the most difficult and time consuming part of the process, as we want to make sure what we have designed, will be printed correctly with the correct sizes.

This call sign stand was created in Fusion 360

Slicing your design

The next part is called slicing the 3d model, this converts the 3d item in individual slices or lairs, as the printer builds up the 3d model layer by layer. It also converts the model to a language that the 3d printer understands called gcode. The gcode contains all the information about the 3d model, layer by layer including what colour that is used for any given layer.

The picture shows the call sign in the slicer / 3d printing software for the Creality K2 Plus printer

You can then review what the 3d printer will actually print. Assuming everything is correct you send the file to the 3d printer which finally prints the 3d item. The print time varies depending on the size of the item to print as well as the complexity of the item and the number of colours used to print the item.
